Hello Charlie (or is it Davy?),
I forgot one, "clear on your final". While that may be true for tube
finals where you can see the electrons, solid state gives nary a clue to
whether the station is clear or not. Is that clear?
I doubt it, I think the FCC would frown on being clear after the fact,
the fact being the station never signed off. Maybe the practical aproach
to that one would be the operator being SK.
Hmmm, I remember a sci-fi show where all communications were handled on
channel D (must have been some hellish QRM) but don't quite remember
which one.
More confusion, in some parts of the US it is SOP to say "break" in order
to get into a repeater QSO, while in others such indicates emergency
traffic, everyone stand by.
It is standard message handling proceedure to say "break" and drop the
carrier (SSB ops may experience some confusion) listening for emergency
traffic interrupting before resuming the message. The US Coast Guard uses
the phrase "break, more to follow" which makes things clear for non
military listeners.
I often use a double over under weak signal conditions, especially on 6M
where signals could be lost at any moment. That makes it clear that the
frequency has been turned over to the other station, sending callsigns
takes too much time in those hectic exchanges.
Back in my CB days I was amused by the Black ops who had thier unique
form of slang. One of my favorites was "I'm a gone". My way of busting
chops was "hello skip land, skip land, skip land. How 'bout that Gone out
there, this is Human from planet earth. What's a Gone and what planet are
you from?" Naturally that stirred up plenty of racist remarks while I sat
back laughing at them.
Dis be da Black Crack from Hackensack under the twin bridges, jump back
Jack! Ahma Gone. Doggone, catgone, da ol' ladygone anna da moneygone,
doggone.
