Keep 'em coming. I had wondered what a 'LID' was for a few years before
bothering to ask. Now I know. Instead of a modern insult, it goes all the
way
back to morse telegraphists putting a tobacco tin lid on the top of their
sounder to amplify the received Morse. All 19th century, nothing to do with
internet as I had thought.
As for 'buried aerials', I just mentioned the half remembered invention by
Heinrich Herz. I thought that would be just listed under history of radio
on some website. I can't afford internet so I use the free computers at our
local library. That limits my browsing as, even though there is no time
limit, I don't like to hog a computer.
If anyone can be said to be the true inventor of radio, it's Hertz.
What schoolboy doesn't remember how his housekeeper polisshed his balls,
causing him to have a brushh discharge instead of just sparks, w3hich made
his coherer cohere a lot better.
As for Marconi, he was just a rich kid whose daddy bought him all the gear
he needed to build a TX woth an untuned AE and take it to England where he
could send morse across the Atlantic.
If you are using a dipole or a beam you are using Herz's invention not
Marconi's If you are a potholer TXing from underground, well, Herz had a
hand in that too.
The bottom line is, that just a comment on something, or an enquiry, like
KB2VXA's tagline, as borrowed by W0RLI can open up a whole world of
knowledge.
All the best *
