The nuclear testing surely wasn't good for the athmosphere as it was
bad for the people living around the test sites.
But the amount of the emission of particles was low compared to
e.g. a vulcano break out, and it are these paticles that have effect on
the weather. So if it had any effect, than not for a long time, as these
particles are washed out of the air after several years.
Allthough the mechanism of weather is much better understood nowadays,
the experts aren't sure what effects have most influence on the change
of weather conditions (climate is just the long time avarage of weather).
Some say, that the increasing radiation from the sun has most impact
on the warmer athmosphere, while other see the cause mainly on
carbon dioxide, methane and other green house gases.
But a fact is, that the CO2 in the air has increased by about 50%,
and we're putting more and more in the air while cutting down more
ad more forrests that could absorbe the CO2.
In parallel, the amount of damage caused by weather desasters has
increased dramatically in the last ten years.
By the way, the clean air activity has also increased the warming,
because less sulfur in the exhaust means less particles,
and these LOWER the temperature. But that does not mean it would be
better to increase pollution again because the effects of acid rain
are undoubted, damaging forrests, buildings, and health.
Concerning the floods here in central europe, there have been two main
influences causing the trouble: Warming the earth means that the air
can take up much more water (vapour) that before. So rain falls tend
to unload more water. But also the winds were very unusual. Normaly,
a low pressure zone is moving quite rapidly, distributing the rain fall
on a large area. But this was different, all the rain was falling down
on a very small area, thus flooding this area extremly.
So global warming and very unusual weather coditions together made
the disaster so disastrous.
The very heavy bush and forrest fires have a different source:
Fire in a forrest is quite normal, and nature has survived it
for a billion years. Actually, a fire every some years is helpful
to keep the fires small. But with mankind trying to stop every fire
as soon as possible and preventing forrest fires for long decades,
a lot more of small wood and other easy inflamable substances add up
on the forrest floor, and this makes fires become so destructive
and almost unstoppable...
So if you make fire prevention, than you have to do the fire's work
and tidy up the forrests!
That's another lesson of nature that people have to learn.
If we don't learn, the nature will teach us the hard way...
