Buried antennas have been used for real radio, as well.
In 1924, J.Corver wrote:-
"Earth-wires represent a quite remarkable form of antenna, with which, in
particular, mr. A.E. Vlug has experimented. It appears possible to use
wires, buried in the ground, even below groundwater, as antennas.
Insulated wires can be used, with an ordinary ground connection at the
set, but mr. Vlug preferred to use bare wire, one in the one direction as
antenna, and one in the other direction as a counterpoise. These wires can
be profitably made several hundreds of metres long for use on long waves.
(...)
Reception is admittedly weaker then on a usual antenna of the same size,
but atmospherics are even weaker still, and the readability of the Indian
[Indonesian] station Bandung has, for instance at [receiving station]
Sambeek, repeatedly been reported better on the earth wires than even on
the V-antenna."
