The Stanley Steamer!! But it didn't last long. During the war our local
farmers used locally designed and produced gas producers which used white
gum charcoal in the converter unit. They were very cheap to run but there
was cionsiderable loss of power to the extent that the driver had to
switch to petrol on steep climbs. During the war I once travelled from my
hilltop home (1000 feet a.s.l.) to a nearby town 10 miles away which was
at sea level, in a taxi at night. The driver switched off his engine and
put his gears in neutral at the top of this steep hill and by the time we
took the bend at the bottom he must have been doing about 70 m.p.h. He
told me he could get halfway to the next town like that. I can vouch for
him; he could! If he'd fitted some wings he could have flown the whole
way. Did nothing for my nervous system though.
Me, I run my car on LPG at about half the price of petrol. It is
environmentally friendly, makes for a clean engine, and has only a little
loss of power. Our benevolent Government even pays close to half the cost
of fitting. A flick of a switch switches to petrol if needbe or on to LPG.
Take your pick!
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE.
