Having just read a bulletin fron KB2VXA I wonderd if any Americans or other
nationalities had had fuel shortages like the ones we have had twice inthe
UK.

Many fascinating devices were produced by the ever inventive Brits to find
a
substitute for petrol (Gasloline)(Essence).
One of my favourites was the farmer who used the excrement from his
chickens to provide mostly methane. He kept this in a box at the reatr of
the car and stored the fumes in a bag on top. From there, it went to the
engine via a modified carburretter.

Not surprisingly, after it appeared on TV, the public called this the
Chickensh*tmobile.
Other ideas invoved home brewers who made alcohol from wood chips, old
rags,
rotten fruit, whatever was handy. This was, in fact, illegal but no one got
busted to my knowledge. Later, the Brazilians started fueling their cars
exclusively on alcohol. They did have problems at first when people turned
up at filling stations without cars but the addition of a nasty taste cured
that problem. Actually alcohol is a far cleaner, more efficent fuel than
petrol. I don't know why the rest of the world doesn't use it.
Perhaps we like supporting OPEC.

As for the CSmobile, the owner did get it out for the second shortage and
other farmers, such as pig farmers, used other fuels which were preferred
to chicken as CS is high in ammonia and people didn't like the smell.

Other people did make steam cars but I don't know much about them.
Perhaps someone else remembers them. I did hear of one that couls burn
almost anything, wood, waste paper, the contents of garbage cans,
altogether what we would call 'envirinmentaly friendly' nowadays but I know
nothing of the construction.

All the best *

p.s. I wonder where Warren gets his methane from.
