IT IS DIFFERENT HERE IN VK.
CONTINUING FROM "LITTLE DIFFERENCES".

" Another thing you forgot is the water in your toilets swirls backward!
Those you mentioned that frighten people are the water saving power flush
type, common here in public buildings.
They would never work in private dwellings, especially rentals because the
cheap plumbing won't supply sufficient pressure. Instead, the government
in it's infinite wisdom mandated water saving toilets with smaller tanks.
The old ones worked just fine, but these have to be flushed several times
to get the fish to swim away. They go around in circles, round and round
and round.
We end up using three to four times more water than before!
BTW, no problem with bits dangling in the water unless you go to France
and sit on the bidet, mistaking it for a toilet. You get an even bigger
surprise when you flush it! "

Well Warren. You did not get it quite right.
Here the "flush" comes with a "rush" or "gush".
The system is a gravity system and the cistern empties the whole contents
straight down the pipe into the bowl. There is no "rotation' or
"swirling", rather the (relatively) large volume of water forces any
contents in the bowl down through the outlet and past an "S" bend.
There is always a small amount of water retained in the bottom of the
bowl, however, that would not amount to more than about a pint.
Some of the more recent models have a water saving feature in that there
are two separate push buttons, one for a "FULL" flush and the other for a
"HALF" flush. If there is only a liquid content to dispose of, the
half-flush is sufficient.
As to direction of rotation, you are right. I have not taken a close look
at what happens at the equator and would be interested to hear comment on
this.
I was given an interesting demonstration by a friend in the north of
Western Australia when he was filling a drinking trough for the cattle.
He opened the outlet and, while the water was running out, he stirred it
in an opposite direction with his hand until it began to swirl in the
opposite direction.
He then ceased his stirring and the water continued its swirl in the one
direction for a short time. The swirling then slowed to a stop and then
reversed direction.
I have not tried this experiment since that demonstration so I don't know
whether we can achieve that same effect much further south of the equator,
as we are here. Must try it some time "IF" I have a bath, which is a rare
occurrence.
OK you "smart alecs", I use the shower frequently. So There !! (hi.)
By the way, bidets are somewhat rare here in VK but not unknown.
Regards,
Ian
