Hi John

Yes and that has reminded me of another device we don't see very often
these days. Line-cord. Remember it was used much by Murphy bedside
radios. When the ends became worn and frayed, some folk would trim just
a little to reveal fresh wire but in doing so lessened the resistance
causing not only the cord to become quite hot but also the valve heaters
to glow a little brighter!

For the younger readers who may not, Line-cord was a mains lead where
the positive was a spiralled thin wire with enough turns to form just the
right amount of resistance to drop the mains voltage to an amount suitable
for changing to DC and valve heater voltage.

Ah, those clever designs of yesteryear...
