Now that the topic of airships has been following history from The
Hindenburg to the modern, it's time for some comments you may find
interesting.
There is talk here of bringing back the airship for much more than the
commercial advertizing and TV platforms they are extensively used for
now. Here at the shore, they make thier appearance frequently in addition
to the light aircraft towing banners seen since the Wright Brothers flew
above the beach at Kitty Hawk N.C.
As for the Hindenburg, a little known fact is the outer fabric was
painted with a sort of varnish containing a mixture of metallic powders.
This could easily been the cause of the crash, unequal electrostatic
charges being built up between the fabric panels causing an arc, igniting
the fabric which in turn ignited the gas contained in bags, or "cells"
within the hull. The key to all this is the composition of the metallic
powder used as pigment, the mixture is called Thermit, the active element
in incindiary devices and a cutting device known as a burning bar.
Hmmm, you learn more from thier historical society than from books and
get to handle artifacts too when you live near Lakehurst.
Oh, maybe it bears repeating being I'm proud of the fact that this BBS is
located in hangar one at Lakehurst NAS, the US home of the Hindenburg.
