Hi Trev. Couldnt really get the drift of your argument. As a helium
balloon rises there are a couple of possibilities. If the ballon is sealed
it rises till it bursts if the skin isnt strong enough. Otherwise it rises
till the mass of air displaced equalls the mass of the balloon and its
contents. A pressure relief valve can determine the height at which this
happens. I didnt understand what you were referring to with objects in a
sealed container. It makes no difference as far as I can see. I did make
a remark in one of my Bulls about Daltons Law of Partial Pressures. In a
sealed container a gram of Helium exerts a pressure of (x)KPa. We replace
the Helium with 8 grams of Oxygen and find the pressure is (y)KPa. We
again replace the Oxygen with 32 grams of Nitrogen and find the pressure is
(z)KPa. If we now fill the same container with 1 gm. Helium, 8 gm Oxygen
and 32 gm nitrogen, we find that the pressure is (x+y+z) KPa. Each gas
fills the container. At equilibrium the helium wont float on the top of
the other gasses. One would think that the addition of Oxygen and nitrogen
would compress the Helium and so on with the other Two gasses. You would
think that the pressure with the Three gasses in the same container would
be greater than (x+y+z) KPa. This is not so. Put a Balloon containing a
gram of Helium and a separate Balloon containing 8 gm. Oxygen and another
32 gm. Nitrogen (Free) in the same container. Now the pressure
of the helium will be greater than (x) KPa by the amount it is compressed.
Pressure times Volume is a Constant if nothing else changes, and so on for
the other Two gasses. The Helium balloon will now be at the top of the
container and the Oxygen balloon at the bottom. The pressure in the
container will be now greater than (x+y+z) KPa.
Dont take my word for it. Check it out. I have been meaning to load up my
encyclodoedias and see what they say.
