Or put slightly differently... If the Hindenburg were to 'filled' with a
vacuum, if would have had more lift than had it been filled with either
helium or hydrogen. The extra lift would equal the weight of the gas
filling the vessel. The filling of the vessel with a lighter than air
gas is simply done to prevent the vessel collapsing under the pressure
of the air.
I understand the Hindenburg was actually filled with hydrogen. The only
source of helium was the US and they would not allow it to the Germans
at the time.
