Hello Elder Statesman, Sir,
Well, Ian strikes again so I just can't resist. BTW, If you call to cuss
me out, please don't shout in my ear this time. (;->)
I never attempted to plug a tulip into a light socket, but some
flashbulbs made for a neat practical joke! I busted Brian's chops enough,
but one thing I forgot to mention is the standard term for "luminaire" is
"fixture" being they are permanently mounted. That "other" term sounds
like false sophistication, "they" tried to push it but it fell flat,
"fixture" was and always will be the electrician's term. "...10 lengths
of 1/2" steel EMT and a case of luminaires." "WHAT???!!! I don't believe
we stock those items, sir."
"End of gripe."
We call them "tubes" instead of "valves" because valves control the flow
of water, air and other fluids. I wouldn't want to shut off the water
with a tube to fix a broken pipe. You forgot to mention that really big
ones are called "fire bottles". Besides, it looks like a TUBE!
I have no idea why we call them FLASHlights, the only ones that flash are
made for the military with buttons for sending Morse code. Otherwise,
when one flashes, it's time to change the bulb.
OH! Another thing you forgot, it was originally called the ELECTRIC torch
to distinguish it from the ones they used to burn down Frankensten's lab.
They simply dropped "electric" when the flaming kind were no longer
needed to set monsters alight.
BULB: What your head looks like when your brain gets too big for your
skull. This was common, even to primitive tribes when someone got his
hands on some White man's books and learned how to read. That's how
shrunken heads came about, as a cure. Today, the problem is dealt with by
modern psychiatry, they are known as head shrinkers, or "shrinks".
You also forgot what the globe has to do with the lamp.
Globe: The glass part of the lamp fixture which surrounds the bulb. See
BULB.
MATCH: What I am to you. I match you wit for wit, only with an American
twist. Too bad there are some out there who fit G. Gordon Liddy's comment
to the procecutor, "When it comes to a battle of wits, sir, you come
unarmed." Then again, how many remember "Find me a lucifer to light my
fag, smile boy that's the style!"? LIDDY??? That fits some of them too!
That's right Ian, GIVE UP, you have met your MATCH! (;->)

LID: Wants to work ground wave, buries antenna.
