This reminds me of a wellknown fact that lighting bulbs traditionally have
a life of approx 1000 hours in operation.
Of each batch manufactured a representative sample undergoes an
accelerated life test. If the test results in an expected life of more
than 1000 hours ,the whole batch is destroyed.
This apparently has been the way to ensure steady predictable sales.
I presume a similar situation exists for the compact fluorescent bulbs
which are supposed to have a useful life not exceeding 8000 hours.
BTW ,also here in Scotland the local elec.power company recently offered
customers a number of these bulbs (up to 5) of different ratings for a
very attractive price. I took up the offer ;the latest models appear to be
causing less or no interference to HF reception , compared with earlier
designs , at least at this QTH. I should add that I now run my station
from 12 V batteries ,charged by a wind generator, hence there is no
connection to the AC grid , maybe that helps.
