Nobody has yet mentioned this, so I shall.
In nautical terminology, the "catenary" of an anchor chain while a
ship is anchored, means the dip or rise and fall along the length
of the chain running from the ships' "Hawse Pipe" down through the
water to the "Anchor" embedded in the sea bed.
The "catenary" effect means that a vessel will ride out swell/waves
by snubbing. So wind or sea will tend to urge the ship away from the
point of anchorage until the chain is taut. Then the weight of the chain
will slowly sink (catenary effect) and bring the ship back to the original
position...
