I don't wish to alarm you or others using compact halogen bulbs but...
I can remember reading a report that some bulbs put out a significant
amount of UV light. When the bulbs are mounted in ceiling fittings your
skin is much further away than when you use them as a desk lamp. The
concern was that long term use of such bulbs at close proximity could act
as a trigger to those with a genetic predisposition to skin cancer. I only
wish I could remember where I'd seen the report so I could refer it to
you.
It may well have been in Which? but I can't remember. I seem to be having
these "senior moments" more frequently as I get older :-)
I don't know if the some bulbs have UV filters in them, I vaguely remember
the article remarking about filters in some of the more expensive units
and urging some caution with cheap units. It was a few years back now and
as with most things, even modern cheap bulbs may have the same UV
protection as the expensive ones had back then.
As with many reports that suggest links between some common compound and
the potential for cancer you need to read and understand the report to
quantify the danger. Sacharin can cause cancer in rats, the inferrence
being that it could cause cancer in humans. However, you'd have consume
hundreds of bottles of squash a day to get the dosage the rats were given.
Similar caution is needed with UV.
Perhaps you might want to use suntan lotion when using the bulbs. You may
even get a tan, which is more likely that getting one from the Sun if you
happen to live in Scotland this Summer :-)
