Hi Ian,
I suffer a similar problem and find those new halogen desk lamps much
better than tungsten lamps.
They have a coloured translucent plastic head, and a similar base
containing the tranformer. The head is mounted on the end of a couple of
telescopic antenna type adjustable rods. The lamp is a 20w and it gives
out a brilliant white light, which is ideal for reading.
A number of outlets are selling these desklamps quite cheaply including
Tesco, which was selling them as I recall for around 3.99 complete with
a spare bulb.
We bought 5 at a fiver each before we spotted the slightly cheaper ones
in Tesco's ;-(
