Yes I did, quite often. It was the speed control of the merry-go-round!
Every fair I went to as a kid had it. The salt water would be in a barrel.
An hinged cover carried the plates. A wooden handle completed the control,
which looked rather dangerous to me!
As for carbon motor controls, I think every sewing machine (electric, that
is) used to have one. Pushing the pedal meant squeezing carbon chips
together, lowering resistance.
Those are probably electronic by now?
