Hi Andy and all,
Your observation is akin to an Apple dropping on your head only in your
case it was a PC. It's a well known fact the hardware must be capable of
properly running the OS and if something is incompatible it won't run at
all. There are plenty of hardware bits to look at, the latest is the
video card with Vista.
Back in 1930s Chicago Mr. Spock discovered problems when using radio
valves in his version of Univac. His explanation was it's like trying to
make a nemonic memory from stone knives and bear skins. At least he knew
the meaning of the term "IBM clone", your problem is with English. When
you substitute "PC" you run into trouble, on this side of the pond even
an Apple is a Personal Computer (as opposed to a mainframe). Not all TNCs
are TAPR 2 clones either, they just follow in the footprints.
It's a conspiracy, when a new OS comes out you have to buy a new
computer. When high compression V8s came out you had to buy premium
gasoline. Now gasoline is so expensive you have to buy a new econobox.
Those who do not upgrade will be exterminated. OOPS, the Doctor put a
stop to that but his girlfriend ended up in a paralell universe. I guess
there is a down side to everything.
