My thanks to Andy for responding if not replying to my recent bulletin.

Andy, I am not complaining about MS removing support for any of their old
programs. Of course they have to stop this sometime and they have given
ample warning.

My question related to who else of the minority users of W98 remaining has
had the same problem of being unable to install the latest verion of Zone
Alarm under W98 and is it intentional?

As it happens :-

1) I am not committed to using W98 for the internet, I just happen to like
the program which meets most of my Non-computer enthusiast needs. When
Zone Labs dropped W95 support some years back they at least gave some
indication of that intent. Maybe they did this time but I just havent
found it! They are perfectly entitled not to consider W98 users in doing
their updates. I just wondered whether it was coincidence or intent.

2) I can still use the internet with a tolerable degree of security on the
W2Kpro partition of my computer as the latest version of Zone Alarm will
install there. Maybe the next one or two will also, Even my Linux
partition is reasonably safe with its lower suscepibilities to malicious
attack. I have Shorewall in that, but it aint as good as Zone Alarm in
that it does not stealth Port 113.

3) So I am not criticising MS or Zone Labs for not supporting my year 2000
computer which would hang up with XP due to shortage of resources. Having
been living on a retirement pension for the last 15 years I just dont feel
like going out to buy a more appropriate computer for these times just
because an un-updateable computer security leaves my operating systems
with compromised security for my very limited internet use. The choice is
entirely mine but I dont need anything more than I have now in the way of
other computer usage. I am also well aware of the consumer market and its
GTHI (Got To Have It) mentality.

Perhaps I should end up with a comment on the bulletin "Why do I like
Packet" It is because it is much more focussed ( meaning less choice) than
the internet which is a prize time waster. Also I dont have to worry about
malicious attacks on my system and spend half my time doing updates to
prevent them. I have been deprived of Packet for about a year until this
last couple of weeks as no BBS has been accessible from here. I really
missed it. So even if I get very few replies to bulletins there is rarely
the kind of rubbish which gets on the Newsgroups etc.

Cheers for now and

73 from Gordon VK3XX@VK3FBD.#MEL.AUS.VIC.AU.OC
