Just how long should Microsoft offer support for old software?

You haven't been able to buy Win98 for a long time. Why should Microsoft
continue to provide free support for an obsolete chunk of software when
they are in the business of selling you new software?

End of sales, end of life and end of support information is published
clearly by Microsoft, so users of obsolete software have no execuses to
moan that they will no longer to get support. Win98 users have had over 5
years to upgrade to new versions of Microsoft software since Microsoft
announced when Win98 support would finish.

There's lots wrong with Microsoft and its business practices but ending
support for 98 and ME is not one of them. It might finally persuade users
to open their wallets and upgrade to something much better!

You can use this as a clarion call to ditch Bill's software and get
yourself some nice free Linux software instead if you don't want anything
else from Microsoft.
