Hello

Especially Ian

Erasing information : HDD : Do not use the described method
of degaussing a HDD if you intend using the disk further.
Destroy it with a sledgehammer if you want to get rid if it.
But degaussing the HDD will also destroy the control tracks
, needed to preisely position the read/write armature, the
tach track which controls speed and other information needed
for its operation. There is more to it than meets the eye.

The Basic security problem you speak of is : When deleting a
file , only the first letter is removed and replaced with a
control byte/sign , which indicates to the operational
system that the following file space is available for
re-use. It is not removed! ONLY overwriting it, by re-using
it, overwriting it uncontrolled by defragmenting it , or
overwriting it with a security code (the US Government only
acknowledges it done right when every free space is
overwritten 3 times) like XXX will make old information
unreadable. Some programmes have this option : Erase and
overwrite (X)(3X) free space.
Thatll do it.
The method of removing only the first file character is used
to gain speed. It would take much longer to erase all file
information.

Keeping info secret, coding it is annother matter. Buy a 1G
USB memo stick, use its coding programme and keep the thing
hidden and out of sight when not in use. That should do it
for many. there are other methods too.

To bulk delete a CD or DVD you need a CD/DVD writer with the
programme capapability to do that. NERO , for instance has
this, the version I use at least. It gives you the warning
that the regular erase is not safe and gives you the option
for removing all your info.(Came with my package)
