I have just been watching a TV prog which was advising on how insecure any
form of file deletion is. They didnn't seem too keen on recommending any
programmes to make sure a file is really deleted, except one very
expensive one.
Maybe I am too paranoid but, even though I am not a criminal and don't
bother going near porn websites, I still like to make sure my disc is
private.
My favourite is Spybot Search & Destroy which has a 'shredder' option.
I have checked out shredded files using the very old 'Oops' and 'undelete'
options as well as just looking for them, using 'Xtree Gold' laughably
ancient and can't see more than 1GB but has a few long forgotten but
useful
options.
'Debug' if you can get a copy; is still very useful for displaying and
renaming files you thought were deleted. Being from the days od DOS, it is
very small and quite simple to use.
Certain government bodies use a system which just involves removing the
actual disc from a HDD and doing a low level read. The answer to this, if
you suspect you might have something you want to definitely remove is just
the same as back in the days of magnetic tape. Use a magnet or, better
still, a degaussing coil; 1,000 turns of wire on a soft metal core,
plugged into the mains, preferably with a small limiting resistor oe, even
a thermistor in line to prevent blown fuses, will do the job.
I do use one of the programmes which creates a safe, into which you can
put anything you want especially secret like bank details etc. Most
require a password to access the programme and the contents of the 'safe'
can be scrambled and password protected. It can also be on a disc, seperate
from the computer.
Even more security can come from hiding a file within a file using
steganography, though I wouldn't use 'Steganos' one of the latest I saw on
the 'net. Any programme which wants you to put your details on a website
before using it is not a thing I would be daft enough to use!
The same goes for PGP. Try to get an older, more secure version, for the
same reason.
I don't know how to bulk delete a CD or DVD yet. I'm sure someone can tell
me:-)
