A time-worn old couple slowly entered McDonalds one cold winter evening.
With neatly-mended outdated clothes they seemed strangely out of place among
the throng of youthful customers. But all there sensed that the elderly pair
had shared a lifetime together.

They shuffled awkwardly to the counter to order, and the old chap paid for
the meal. Ever so slowly they proceeded to a rear table with the tray of food.
There was one hamburger, one small order of fries, and one orange drink.

The elderly man unwrapped the plain hamburger, and carefully cut it in two.
He placed one half in front of his wife. Then carefully he divided the fries,
and again placed one half in front of his wife. He took a taste of the
orange juice, then his wife too took a small sip.

Soft murmers revealed that other customers were taking all this in. As the
old fellow began eating his repast, a young man approached and courteously
offered to buy another complete meal for them. The old timer thanked him, but
replied that they were just fine. They were used to sharing everything.

The young man apologized and withdrew. But as the drama continued, he
noticed that the lady hadn't eaten a thing. She merely sat patiently and
watched her partner chew on his meagre fare.

Again the kind young man approached and begged to be allowed to buy them
another meal. The old lady smiled gently, but explained that no, thank you,
they were used to sharing everything.

"But ma'am," he replied, "you share everything, but yet you've not eaten
your half-share. What is it that you are waiting for?"

And she softly answered, "The teeth".
