Yep !
Unfortunatly not all users appreciated that packet is not just about
bulletins and message. We have the ability to transfer files/programs
and pictures from BBS file download areas and to each other.
1K2 isn't much of a problem because most files for our purposes are
not large anyway ;-)
We have a dxcluster system and the WWC World Wide Converse network which
is just as good as IRC on the internet or AOL Instant Messaging any day.
It just needs packet users to know about it in the first place.
It's not hard - it's not a black art - it's just a case of connecting to
a system and sending some simple commands. All available just by sending
a simple HELP or ? command.
Why waste time searching the internet through tons of trash when the
best people to ask is radio amateurs - on here.
rec.radio.ham and all thast nonsense on the internet is utterly useless
if you want help or want to read interesting posts.
And now I'd like to include the rest of amateur radio...
Amateur radio is boring of there's nothing to read or nothing to hear.
That means we should ALL make the effort to create activity.
We must not assume a dead band has no propogation and we must call CQ
because it's amazing what can happen. Here's an example..
Back in about 1987 (the bottom of the sunspot cycle) I called CQ on
28.5Mhz
when the band was absolutly dead - and a ZL4 called me !
And ever since then I have been fascinated by "dead bands" ;-)
We also need to answer more CQ calls.
I become very annoyed at the attitude of many operators that will not
talk to locals or stations in their own continent. The 50Mhz band in the
UK is a prime example - 2Mhz of totally wasted space.
Also 29Mhz FM is wasted too.
So lets make the effort next year to put more effort in calling CQ
as well as answering CQ calls.
If people get replies then they come back for more and amateur radio
prospers.
