John

I replaced the back-up battery in a friend's IBM Thinkpad.

The battery was located on the motherboard but it was a case of, they
started with the battery and built the rest of the computer around it.
There was much disassembly required to get to it.

However, I managed to get a copy of the "disassembly" manual online from
the people who took over IBM service (can't think of their name offhand).
The manual was available as a free download. Get your best friend, Google,
to work.

The manual reveals the location of hidden screws, and which plugs to
unplug, etc. Well worth the trouble of finding the documentation.

The battery was a cheap Silver Oxide or Lithium device.
