Hello all XPs

Is there a DOS in Win XP? There seems to be some doubt!

Of course there is! All systems need a 'Disk Operating System', and Win XP is
no exception. But what you call it may be another matter. Asking XP for it's
'VERsion'gets only 'Windows XP...' so it may have something to hide!

At the Win XP CMD line (try it), type (START/RUN/CMD) and you can ask for
the usual DOS info such as MEM and MEM/C and see the memory distribution,
or send/copy/delete etc. You can even call your BBS and operate 'basic packet'
as we used to do.

So, there are some old DOS features there, but keep it quiet!

But not all old favourite programs will run under Win XP, or the other new
operating systems. The fundamental difference is, as pointed out by Andy,
GM7HUD.

Win XP is a 32 bit system whereas our older programs used only 16 bits.
This means that you can't run .exe applications and expect them to work.
There are 32 bit versions of some of the old programs, and these would be
suitable for the latest Windows.

One trick that may work is to use the 'compatibility' mode provided. Right
click the program shortcut, and click the compatibility tab. Select RUN This
Program in Compatibility Mode and click OK. I tried this for InstanTrack, but
the compatible options listed were '95, 98, 2000, NT, and XP. Not Win 3.1
which is old 16 bit.

Many thanks for the help and interest shown in this question. SPs are still
arriving with similar suggestions. This, (and Helmut's 'Physics' problems)
have shown that we can discuss normal 'Amateur' matters, and new callsigns
pop up to comment.

This may be another way to promote packet.

73. Dick. VK3ABK.
