Hello Everyone.
I sent a help bulletin about running Win XP in command mode. I got instant
replies via two SPs and had the problem solved immediately! How about that?
I have sent SPs to the two gentlemen, and as there have been other replies,
and possibly other interested readers, I would like to thank all concerned
and add a few comments.
I think we have all had the temptation to add to or interfere with one of
the operating systems or an application that is running well, but thinking
that we might add something in the wrong place, don't risk it. This is why
I refrained from adding a DOS to my XP installation.
You will be pleased to know that the simple solution to a command prompt in
Win XP, as suggested by G0TSU and G4APL, is to click START/RUN and type CMD
at the program option. And there it is! The familiar command line in glorious
black and white! When finished, I type 'exit', and back to Win XP.
And, further more, I now have 'command prompt' option in my Start window,
making CMD only a click away. This has revealed a further advantage.
I think we have all had trouble getting an older (DOS) program to run with
one of the 'windows', especially '98', '2000', 'XP', and even have an old PC
on hand to run these. The solution is to use the CMD mode in XP and maybe
the others, that I haven't tried.
For instance, I know that some have had trouble with the graphics from John,
G8MNY, when using Win 98, 2000 Xp, etc., whereas having a DOS lurking in the
background as I do, results in perfect reproduction. (Don't forget '8BIT CONV
in your terminal program). Using XP in my laptop gave a distorted result.
But now that I have the CMD line, I can type EDIT (filename) and get John's
graphics in perfect 'blue and white' like an engineering blueprint!
Good one John!
This could work for other DOS programs, but one still has me tossed. I like
'InstanTrack' for satellite tracking, but using XP/CMD the 'update' text
below the map is garbage, and the map itself is in 'low res' CGA mode. Even
the time and TZ function input is not accepted. So, not ALL DOS programs run
in XP/CMD. By the way, typing VER at the CMD line, gets 'Microsoft Windows XP'
not a 'version of DOS'.
I hope all this is as interesting to others as it has been to me.
Thank you for your helpful comments.
73. Dick. VK3ABK.
