Hi Vin and readers,

I agree with everything you wrote, it all makes perfect sense. My 
situation is but one, conditions DO vary so what worked for me may not 
always be the case.

My suggestion now is start at the bottom, if a problem is encounered work 
up. In other words, if isolation is needed add it, if transformers don't 
work adequately use optics. Yes, ground loops can be a problem, that's 
why all the test equipment where I used to work was isolated using those 
"3 way" adapters on the AC mains plugs, the protective case ground left 
floating. Yes, some older sound cards have no line in provision so 
another L pad attenuator is needed. BTW, line in / line out is usually 
600 ohms, the pad may be constructed accordingly.

Then again we just might be barking up the wrong tree. I just thought of 
something, the original question regards a >USB< interface. Is he trying 
to use a USB port? Only the original poster can answer that...
