When I read Stew's proposal to sink money into selling wireless toys, it made
me think just how far ahead the GSM world already is in terms of deployment
and maturity. Stew - save your money, or, better yet, invest it in one of the
real wireless companies.

The wireless telcos realize the money to be made, and they're happy to make it
one penny at a time.

Stew, have you read GSM 07.05 and 03.40 ? Considering your zeal for blurring
the lines between amateur radio and other radio services, I'm surprised you're
not
all over this.

Non-sequitor. Our wireless carriers are happy to subsidize the phones
and sell the service rather cheaply. Here in Northern California, my GSM
service plan includes 500 peak minutes, 1000 off-peak, free roaming in
CA and NV, free domestic long-distance and 300 free SMS messages, for
about $60/month. Oh, can't forget voice mail, and bidirectional email-SMS
capability and caller-ID.

Especially on weekends, my POTS lines see few outgoing telephone calls.

There are family calling plans now that make family radios look silly for
anything but camping in the backwoods where there is no coverage.

Socialism has nothing to do with it - this is capitalism, hard and fast.
The fact is, even in Europe it's capitalism.

Major non-sequitor.

Yes - the USA is years behind Europe and Japan in this area, and
is "stuck in the mud" trying to convert some frequency space(broadcast
TV channels 60-69), in order to "auction it off" to the highest bidders
to support the very services you and I speak of. But this could take
YEARS! And so we fall farther and farther behind the world in
technology! It is actually possible to do many of the mobile PDA
applications, using existing inexpensive ham technology, on ham freqs
right now - don't believe what you hear from the old "PBBS tight-
sphinctered naysayers".

Thanks for the info - I'll check it out next week. I work on my remote
Rosarito homesite on the weekends, and I only have a 1200bps packet
link set up down there so far. Eventually, I'll be able to go thru an
Internet Gateway at my place in San Diego.

STANDARD DISCLAIMER: I do not directly respond to this guy anymore. He
is one of the old ham PBBS operators - "Gods in their own minds". He
is a complete waste of bandwidth, is always argumentative, and NEVER
adds any useful information to any conversation.
