Hmmm... How much does the monthly service cost? What frequencies does
it operate on?

I'm working on a PUBLIC Internet-backboned system that will operate on
MURS frequencies, uses existing PDAs, and will be VERY low-priced.

This is not clear from the web site.

900MHz device! Seems to run at 19200bps. I just found out that this
kind of thing apparently is very popular in Japan. I had this kind of
idea about two months ago, and have started a company(PubCel), and have
been working on apps.

I'm working on 9600bps applications on MURS VHF frequencies. The
communications range should be MUCH higher on VHF. With 900Mhz UHF,
you are very limited. Also, you can't do anything with the antenna to
increase range. With MURS, we should be able to.

Note: TAPR is trying to do their radio on 900Mhz too!

Note: This device has a more restricted screen size than the $149 Palm
MP100 160x100 vs. 160x160. Also, it has very little RAM 512K vs.
4Mb. However, it is cool that it has built-in RF capability. The kids
are going to like being able to communicate with each other in class -
I've got two teenagers, and this is what gave me the idea. But look at
the range; 150ft indoor - 300ft outdoor. What a joke. I bet those are
lab numbers, and you won't even get that(same with the TAPR FHSS
project!). I need to take my company public.

And a nice Bronx cheer to all you old PBBS nincompoops who didn't see
this coming. Try loosening up the old sphincters a little bit, and
quit threating to "report" anyone doing Internet-backbone applications
on ham freqs. These applications on these device are mostly e-mail,
chat, and games, anyway. With cheap 19200bps capable TEKK radios, there
is NO REASON why we can compete here, AND bring TONS of kids into the
hobby at the same time.

While the "restrictive" attitude of some hams has restricted growth of
Internet-backboned digital comms on the ham freqs, the real factor has
been a lack of modern applications for low-moderate speed packet(1200-
19200bps) - APRS being the exception. Now that PDAs are more capable,
low/moderate speed packet has an opportunity to make a comeback. The
difference this time will be that the backbone will be the Internet,
instead of the kooky HF-forwarding PBBS forwarding system of the late
80's and early 90's(which functioned very much like a Internet
newsgroup, but much slower, and much less reliably!). Do you know who
the BIGGEST opponents of Internet-backboned systems are? Why, none
other than a group of aging PBBS HF message forwarding system
operators. These "spoil-sports" are still bitter that they can't "play
GOD" anymore with the PBBS system. I haven't figured out their
reasoning for opposing Internet-backboned systems so vehemately. I
suppose it is to show that they were "good Gods", and that we should
return to the "golden" days of HF message forwarding - which mainly was
a forum for selling old ham gear, and supporting high-speed Morse Code
requirements(due to the "slanted" view of "the Gods").

So you have a pecuniary interest in this stuff.

We would never have guessed!

You operate illegally, and you WILL be turned in.
It's that simple.
