My understanding (and I may be wrong) is that Kenwood designed
a special purpose IC containing the 1k2 and 9k6 TNC. They will
now include this IC many of their radios. For example, their
new radio covering HF through 1296 will utilize the same technology.
No doubt, there was some significant development cost in producing
this, but they are now the only one of the big three (YaeComWood)
with TNC functions in the radio.
I'm saying that developing this special application IC is an
investment not a major scientific breakthrough.
Maybe this will sell radios for them. Icom's gimmick (if you will)
seems to be these large color LCD displays. Yaesu, evidently,
doesn't need a gimmick.

The TAPR site at least had the following links:
YAM (Yet Another Modem):
http://www.microlet.com/yam/
BayCom (Bavarian Packet Radio Group):
http://www.baycom.org/
Apparently the Europeans have leapfrogged us(at least in the low-
bandwidth digital world). Has anyone experimented with any of this
stuff?
I wouldn't doubt that these guys just took the TAPR 9k6 Modem design,
and put it on an FPGA!
Sorry if I seem like Rip Van Winkle, and am asking some old questions,
and drawing some old conclusions - but I got out of the packet radio
scene in '95, and just recently got back into it. It looks like TAPR
has been sleeping too.
I'm I calculating correctly here? The price of the YAM PCB is about
$10, and the FPGA will cost about another $15. I would assume the cost
of the descrete components won't amount to more than about $5. So you
can get the kit for about $30. That is FAR less than the TAPR modem
behemoth's $80 price tag. If the European modems work - why does TAPR
even BOTHER to sell this boat anchor anymore? This seems to be a dis-
service to the Amateur Community.
Am I wrong in asking "What the HECK is going on at TAPR?"
I'm more convinced than ever that they are only interested in their
FHSS science project, and have lost all sight of the applications end.
I feel like a dipshit for renewing my membership for $20(after letting
it lapse for 5 years). Are these guys just a bunch of "high-
compression heads" or what?

It sounds as though you have a bone to pick with TAPR.
I do not have answers to your questions and I was quite
disappointed to see what happenned with the TAPR weather
station recently.
Could be historically that some other opportunities were
missed, as well.
But, let me say that TAPR accepts proposals for projects
and anyone (as far as I know) is welcome to submit one.
I think the fundamental limitation may be the motivation
of the membership and not any conspiracy on the part of
some ruling party within the organization.
Your point is well taken, though. Kinda like the old
saying "What have you done for me, lately?"
