I would suggest a RigBlaster. It is the best thing I did for my ability
to make PSK QSO's. Address is http://www.westmountainradio.com/

Subject: Help with PSK-31

Hi all! Here's my problem:

I have built several interfaces so far - I am using Digipan and a Toshiba
2595CDT laptop. Recieving is OK but I have noticed multiple 'railroad
tracks' of the same QSO. Thinking it was an interface issue I have built
several , improving each as I go - or at least trying to. I have yet to
have a successful contact - but I am putting out audio as evidenced by my
power meter. So my questions are -

1. What might be the cause of the "multiple QSO reception"? they seem to be
spread about 200hz or so apart and at lower strength as you go out from a
"center" signal.

2. I can understand not getting a contact if I'm not on freq. , but I must
wonder if I am putting out a signal at a the appropriate frequency. I have
called CQ a few times and I seem to get a reply slightly to the side of the
selected freq. Any idea as to the cause of this?

3. Any other info would be gladdly accepted.

Thanks!!!

The RigBlaster isn't going to do anything for his receive or off
frequency problems. RigBlaster doesn't even process the received
signal, only the Tx signal and PTT lines.

Assuming that the signals being received are in fact reasonably clean,
something is distorting the incoming PSK waveform. Are you overdriving
something in the receive chain? Do you have an amplifier or anything
in the receive line or are you just connecting the receiver speaker
output to the sound card line in? If you're using the sound card's
mike input, try the line input instead. Mike inputs are easy to
overdrive *and* they are not very clean on some sound cards. The
receiver AGC can cause some distortion of the PSK signal on some
receivers. Try the slow AGC position. Make sure your sound card's
software mixer controls are not set wide open. Somewhere between 1/3
and 2/3 is usually best in order to keep the sound card itself from
generating distortion.

Once you get the receiver cleaned up, if you still have the frequency
problem with NET checked then it's probably the fault of the
transceiver. Make sure the RIT is turned off or centered. Worst case,
if something else is off in the transceiver you may be able to add
just enough RIT to get the Rx and Tx on the same frequency and then
leave it set there.
