Subject: Field day review (MixW rocks)
we had the exact opposite expeirence. although there is way to much QRM
from the Kilowatt amplifier on SSB to do other protocols such as SSTV or
300bps packet, PSK31 worked flawlessly, amazing everyone who stopped by.
When we turned up the rigs speaker, often you could only here the noise from
the other stations, and not even notice a signal was present! We used only
30 to 40 watts output, not causing any interference to other stations. It
was amaizing, I must say.

The free programs Winpsk and Zakanaka and EVEN Digipan are just as
good as Mix32, maybe better. TRUETTY is rather mediocre for PSK31, I
would use it only if you are using both RTTY and PSK31. It also is a
pay program.

Subject: how does PSK31 really work?
Sound cards are basically a Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) to play
the sounds, and an Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) to record them.
Some sound cards have DSP functions in them, but for the applications
like you're talking about, the digitzed audio is processed by the CPU
under control of the software. For a really good tutorial on sound card
functionality, go to:
www.creative.com/developer
You can download the complete System Developer Kit (SDK), which includes
manuals, some software, and some samples.

Steve:
Well, I dooon'tt thinkkkk soooo....!
CW is digital is it not? I find that mode inmplemented in all of the
multi-protocol terminal control units.
It's widely used on Meteor Scatter and EME circuits because of it's great
efficiency.
I mostly work CW [lately almost exclusively] and not by "ear" but by digital
machine. I use my ear only to augment the tuning process.
What???
Steve, my friend, you need to learn more about digital communications...
Get with the program...

Public domain? I've also heard the "open source" term used about it, but to
me that implies a GPL-like license.
