My advise. Use a genuine Sound Blaster card -- not a clone. Also, for try
putting input on the 'mic' input jack instead of the line input jack. I have
a genuine
SB Pro, and it works good for 1200 baud in Linux.

Listen to the output with proper speakers to make sure it sounds 'like packet'
before hooking up to a radio.

Also, when you build the kernel, I find the easiest way for me is to strip
out as much as I can in the kernel build process. I make it as small as
possible,
only including drivers I need. I turn off modules, and then 'make bzdisk'
This makes
a floppy disk, that I can boot up without having to screw up the system.
