It's $99 with or without contract. If you use the 800-number to order,
(which is the only way if your Circuit City is out) then you will be
automatically signed up for the service upon signing for the package.
This is not a contract, however, and can be cancelled any time. I am
just going to play with it for the first month while I'm getting together
my game plan for modification, and then I'm going to cancel.
Rumor is that they didn't require this as recently as last week, but,
I guess I can understand where they are coming from on this one.

Can you tell me why I'm hearing ALE on 17m ham frequencies?
Is that band shared with some commercial or military user of ALE,
or are hams actually using this protocol to connect to a set
group of users?
Are you using your MICOM-2R for commercial or amateur use?
How much did it cost? I'm guessing in the $3k range.

Subject: Dolt needs suggestions on KamPlus v.8 software
I am trying to activiate for the first time a KamPlus v.8 and really
know nothing about the software available. I am a relic from the
1960's. relicensed in 1997 and looking to avoid making a few mistakes.
I will be interfacing with a FT-1000MP, and possibly a Kachina 505DSP
at some point later.
I am looking for windows based software to run on Windows 98 for both
HF and VHF. Don't ask me what I want to do, as I really don't know.
VHF packet and some of the common HF modes would be nice for starters.
Obviously, a package that is flexible would be a plus.
I see the main programs out there are KAWIN, KaGold, and PKGold. What
are the advantages and disadvantages of each? I am looking for a
short cut to tap into the experience of others, and would prefer to
not have to buy all of them to try to find out myself. Remember, I am
Rip Van Winkle, and I just woke up from 1967.
Thanks in advance & 73

Ray,
The one I really enjoy is XPWIN by KG7XP in Phoenix Arizona. You really
should test drive and find which one does what you want. But For my
money gary's was best.

Subject: Dolt needs suggestions on KamPlus v.8 software
Ray, I am currently running a KAM+ v 8.0 with PacTerm98 v 1.4. I have used
Hostmaster in the past which is a DOS based program and was very good for my
application, which is general HF ragchewing and running packet on the VHF
screen
but was not a Windows program. When I decided to upgrade to a WIN95 program I
got Easyterm which I was never able to get to run the way I wanted. Easyterm
does has some nice features . To be fair I was switching between a PK12 and
the
KAM and I think I messed up the configuration files so the program not
running
was my fault. I then started using PacTerm98 which for me is the best
solution.
Its very simple to use, has excellent support, and has been very stable for me
with Windows and a KAM+ ( I can't screw it up ). Remember I use it for
general
ragchewing on PACTOR and running a packet station on VHF. I have never used
the
other programs you listed so maybe someone else will tell you about those.
There is an excellent page you can check for wiring up your connections to the
radio / KAM and it is http://freeweb.pdq.net/medcalf/ztx/wire/index.html
I hope this helps and if you have any other questions please feel free to send
me a email at " rfay@pclink.com " and I hope to see you on the air in the near
future.
