I found an impressive looking RTTY,SSTV,FAX,CW demod program from
http://www.bonito.net
Name of the program is: RadioComm 4.0 DEMO
It requires Pentium Computer running WIN95/98 and inputs from the
Soundcard's Line In or Microphone to the Receiver.
With the DEMO version, it comes with several .wav files of all the
different modes it can receive. However, I have not found anyway
to get the demo version to decode my own inputs from the soundcard.
Question: Can the Demo version be configured to process data retrieved from
my own soundcard and SSB receiver? I don't think it
can....
TIA!

Good question. We should all wait for Mr. Brabham to comment first,
since he has his finger on the pulse of the hobby. Go ahead "Chuckles"

Where do you see the future of digital communications on amateur radio?
Is there a future that could use the same basic software/hardware
combination regardless of frequency? Or do we expect a future where
there is no future?
I'm not asking for flame wars here. Just insight into something that has
a real chance of attracting new people into our hobby. Before it dies
due to lack of interest.
Look at the marketing being placed on 'internet ready phones,' 'email
{non-computer} appliances,' etc. Attracting new people into amateur
radio will be easier IF we have viable something to offer as bait that
is fairly easy to implement. If you could say that 'yeah, I can get
sports scores from the net using amateur radio', you might have a real
chance at getting new blood in here. Of course, if you are opposed to
all that new blood being brought into amateur radio, then just pack it
in. Everyone knows that the hobby needs to grow-or fold.
Ideas, opinions anyone?

Subject: What about those computerless email terminals for packet?
There are several computerless email terminals now being marketed at people
that dont want to be bothered with a computer but want to send and receive
email. they are basically a keyboard with LCD display and a telephone modem.
Some have acoustic modems for the handset. they sell for $100-$200.
It seems that the telephone modem could be removed and a VHF/HF modem
crammed inside.
Seems like a good alternative to the Tandy computers used in mobile packet.
Any thoughts on this?

Even at the $100 price, I think it would be a really bad idea.
First of all, you would probably have trouble getting the RF
modem to fit in a nice, concise package. Secondly, look at
the alternative available. You can get a fully functional
computer with which you can do other menial tasks, like track
satellites and the like for well under that price.
(Maybe I'm just spoiled by the college scene, but a 486-66 with
windows 95 is lucky to be worth $50)
Anyhow, one could stick a PK-88 without the cover ( and a fan
in place) right in a 5.25 disk drive slot. Haven't tried it
with a KAM, but I would imagine it's about a similar fit.
And if you wanted to explore the realm of dumb terminals, oh
my, are you in for a deal. I've sold entire table-fulls of
these at $5 a peice. Hook up the TNC and you're out the door.

Having Don 'n Steve in a discussion of Packet Radio is like going to a
topless bar, only to discover that a couple of queers have decided to crash
the place and sit around making fun of the straights.

Your participation in this newsgroup has (according to the deja
news query) been one of throwing rocks, and complaining about
everything.
Is this all we can expect, and if so, why not find a group you
can communicate with?
Why not tell us your vision of where packet radio is headed, and
spare us your contribution of what appears to be hate mongering.
