After being off the air for about 5 years or so, it's time
to sell this fine rig and the 1270B TNC.
Kenwood: 5w or 45w, 144-148 MHz VFO with 14 memory channels.
Scan & CTCSS. With MC-48B DTMF microphone. Original manual.
Prob needs a new lithium battery; noticed it forgets memory
settings when power has been off awhile. Excellent condx.
See photo at http://yourpage.suscom.net/awilcox/Sales/Kenwood33b.jpg
I bought it new in '87 ($340) and used it as base station and
later connected it to MFJ-1270B packet TNC.
TNC is the standard MFJ with instruction manual. I added in a
circuit board for tone alert when digital connection is made
to the TNC: the Sonalert in photo does a Morse "C" for "connect."

Rear: http://yourpage.suscom.net/awilcox/Sales/TNCb36c.jpg
Asking ...
Kenwood $ 150
MFJ TNC $ 70
For both together, $200, and I'll include the interconnect cables.
Terms... prefer cash or money order. You'll pay shipping and
insurance from 17701 (central PA).

You may be seeing binary data transfer of messages between HF packet relay
stations. I dont know if many Packet BBS's a still on HF, more are on
Pactor now.

Hello Donald,
Many of the BBSs use HF packet for forwarding traffic between themselves. They
ID at 300 baud (required by law) but use data compaction to move the traffic
faster. I suspect that is what you are hearing.

Thanks for the assist Rick.
I have to figure out what version of firmware is in the unit and then
I can go forward.
I only want the packet controller for packet communications between a
couple of local hams.
Packet activity in our area, suburban metro chicago, has pretty much
passed from the scene and only a few remaining packet operators.
