All of the new activity in my (local) area over the last year or so has been
AX25 stuff, but I doubt that reflects the global situation. Lots of tcpip
hype out there.

I don't know the details about what you are mentioning here, maybe
it is time to look at the relevant WWW sites again...

Long ago, I implemented a feature in NET that rejects duplicate TCP tries
when the link is in VC mode, and an earlier try is still sitting in the
AX.25 "unacked packets" queue. What you are mentioning here seems to
be the same thing under Linux. It sure helps a little.

And then, if I want one in Canada, I have to pay shipping and duty and
taxes over that. At that price, they wont flood the market, even for
boaters -:)

Seems about right unfortunately. I have a Yamaha OPL3-SAx built into
my notebook, and none of the DOS software will use it (like BTL for RTTY).

Get Windows versions of all of these -- then they don't care which
sound card you have.

This is not true for all programs that exists. Some win progs are
satisfied if they see a device driver which tells it is a soundblaster
card. Some (e. g. W95SSTV) need _true_ 32 bit drivers (yes, there are
driver for Win 95 + up which are 16 bit actually!). Some just need a
"BLASTER=" statement in config.sys. And some do direct hardware calls
and need a certain hardware (usually Soundblaster/Creative Labs). Since
SB 16 is the de-facto-standard, get yourself this card, you usually can
buy it for a low price (used), and there is no need for fancier cards
like SB 32/64/128 or similar. With a SB 16, most progs should work fine.
With so-called compatible cards, you may face a few or even a lot of
porblems.
