The man who will certainly know the answers to all your questions is
Dr. John Morris, GM4ANB. I believe that he was a delegate, perhaps
even Chair of the host country's VHF Committee, at the IARU Region 1
meeting at Maidenhead which adopted this standard. I haven't seen
John posting here for about one year and I hope he's well. His web
site is still up, so I presume he's not changed his ISP.
I suggest you try mailto:john@kirsta.demon.co.uk.

Thanks for the correction.
I typed it directly from the Lillehammer IARU Region 1 recommendation
C5.10, which _incorrectly_ talks about World Grid System 84 (WGS-84),
but it is correct in the annex :-).

Basically, a lot of the new DSL technologies are using HF
bands for their carriers. Imagine HF being transmitted over
all the twisted-pair copper in your area.

And, me, suddenly cable modems don't look so bad. At least, the cable TV
system has to be responsible for 'leakage' out on to the radio spectrum. I
don't
see why the phone company should be exempt from all this -- except for maybe
that they're a little better at managing, the, err, political, situation.
Seems to me,
if the phone companies want high bandwidth internet service, they should put
in fiber.
Interestingly, during Pacificon, a couple people brought up this issue
during question
and answer periods with the ARRL and Riley Hollingsworth, and every time
this
was mentioned in the public group, the speakers starting talking about the
3.520mhz cable tv interference issue -- which was kind of a weird
non-sequitor.
So, I'm not quite sure what's going on -- if this is real or what. Maybe
these guys
hadn't read the hamradio-online article.

Can't argue with what you say, Steve, but some of us would
rather roll our own for our personal use and learn something
in the process. Time was when most hams rolled their own.

If the number of proprietary protocols on the amateur bands still
continue to increase, it becomes quite easy to sneak in your own
encrypted commercial message service on the ham bands and make some
money out of it. I hope this was not what you had in mind :-).
But seriously, any intruder watch becomes quite complicated, since a
large number of expensive proprietary boxes would be required to check
if a signal is legitimate amateur radio traffic or is some other
service intruding into the amateur bands.
