Their web page seems to be down, but is it gone? Has something happened to
the business? Looking to update Pacterm..

We can't even get rig manufactures to have a "standard" mike
connector. 8-Pin, 5-Pin, 4-Pin and if they get the connector right,
it'll be wired different. If somehow the connector is the same and
it's wired correctly, the mike impedance will be different! Even
headset connectors come in three sizes, stereo and mono - that's six
possible combinations! And you wanted what - a standard protocol and
command set? :-)

Yes, what a mess. However, as long as all these modes were in
hardware/firmware, and the firmware provided a STANDARD interface back to the
computer, the issue wouldn't be as bad.

Even standard TNC's by various manufacturers have their differences. They all
have "MYCALL", but for setting the hardware speed, Kantronics has "TBAUD",
while AEA (and maybe Timewave, unless they changed it) has "HBAUD" and
"PARITY", etc. Of course, each manufacturer may offer features beyond the
standard set, but for the standard set, there SHOULD BE ONE, universal command
set for configuration, yet there isn't.

Good luck in getting these exotic modes to at least have a standard command
interface.

I'm just getting started in digital communications. Where do you find these
software only approaches?

Most of the ham rtty is between 14.080 and 14.100 MHz. YOu can find
some on the other bands. Go to the www.arrl.org site and see if they
post the bulliten frequencies and times. They send them several times a
day using 170 shift at 60 wpm or about 45.5 baud and your receiver
should be set for lower side band for normal shift as with most ham
transmissions. After the arrl sends a normal rtty signal they switch to
another mode to send it over.
Good place to check out your equipment.
