APRS on 144.390 has a one line email function. You send a
message to EMAIL and the first part of the line is the email
address. This would be good for messages like:

jimmy@msn.com RON Oklahoma City EN 405-670-1212

Where RON is remain overnight for you non-veterans :-)

They can send you messages using APRS as well. With internet
links everywhere (although any that use aprs.net as their
domain name have been hosed because it keeps crashing) any
local traffic can thus be world-wide.

I would put my money on APRS growth.

Yes, there are a number of Packet BBS's that provide that service. You have
to make prior arrangements with the SYSOP, and he manually makes the
Packet/E-mail crossover so that he can ensure that nothing illegal makes
into the Ham network from the Internet.

As long as you have access to the Packet network, you can use these services
to send and receive E-mail. No business stuff or nasties, of course.

To find the server nearest you, send an inquiry out on Packet, addressed
first @yourstate and if that gets you no response, try @ALLUS, then as a
last resort, @WW. The closer the server is to you, the faster the service
will be overall, so it's worth the effort to look for one that is either
nearby, or one HF hop away.

Thanks for you response. I am actually looking for Gateways around the
planet. We are leaving on a world voyage in our boat & would like to have a
heads-up on what stations are acting as gateways. Thanks again, Steve

Many different lists. Check you local packet BBS under PACTOR and CLOVER
for the lists that are posted there. You didn't mention which mode you would
like
to use, but PACTOR is probably the best bet. There are many many gateways
of different flavors on air full time.

I am having trouble hooking up my new IC-746 to my old PK232. My old radio
had a hook up for direct FSK keying (IC-751A). I can't tell from the manual
if the new rig has this capability as well. Does it? Has anyone connected
it to a PK232? What did your wire diagram look like?

Yes the IC-746 has FSK capability. Look at Pin 1 of ACC 1, that is
the FAK connection. Pin 3 ACC 1 is the HF send line.
