Subject: Remote dialup via ham 2m etc?
Hello,
Although I'm not a ham operator, I was wondering if the following was
practical. Could I use a portable or handheld computer, a modem, and a 2m
radio (or maybe HF) to dial up a local ISP as opposed to using a cellular
modem via either a repeater or some base station? Why would I do such a
thing? I want to try to establish a real-time link for longer distances or
not exactly line of sight than what cell modems can do. Basically, we're
talking out in the boonies (miles away).
I realize that the bandwidth of the signal may present a problem in this
scenario...
All constructive advise would be deeply appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
John

FYI. This is a good overview of some of what's happening with
wireless networks in the non-amateur world.

Hi everybody,
For those interested in Wireless LAN, I've updated my "Linux
Wireless LAN Howto". The Linux Wireless LAN Howto is the most
exhaustive ressource on the web about Wireless LANs and describes the
state of Linux support.
The changes :
- -----------
The driver and hardware section should be quite up to date and
has been updated pretty continously. Since last annoucement, I've
added the Symbol Spectrum, Aironet Arlan 802.11 and No Wire Needed. I
now also mention the WebGear and Apple Airport.
The "Wireless LAN technology overview" has had a really major
update. In fact, it's the second major update in two years. I've added
more than 50 % new content and doubled the number of figures. On that
side, I should be pretty up to date with regards to upcomming
standards.
The top level page contains better navigation and the list of
links has been updated.

Since last annoucement, the web page has moved to :

Happy reading...
