'99 TAPR/ARRL Digital Communications Conference
The '99 TAPR/ARRL Digital Communications Conference
has come and gone from Phoenix.
Since the Conference Hotel was a mere 10 miles away,
I was able to attend this year and I was there almost
from start to finish.
On Friday, I was pleased to hear all about the latest in
APRS developments from the developers themselves
including Bob Bruninga (DOS) and Keith Sproul (Mac
and Win as well as the new X-APRS). Also represented
was APRS+SA (using Street Atlas Maps). Steve
Dimse proposed a new XML server for APRS data.
If anything, APRS was quite well represented at this
conference both on Friday and in the main paper sessions
on Saturday. The PIC microcontroller was another common
theme throughout.
Other interesting topics (to me) included Johan Forrer's
presentation of of Recent Developments in HF Digital
Communications including PSK-31, C-BPSK, MT63,
MT HELL, Q15X25, and Digital Speech.
The TAPR web site www.tapr.org will have the audio etc.
and the Proceedings obviously are a source for the papers.
Spread Spectrum, the International Space Station, Regulatory
Updates and other issues were also discussed.
Also announced was the creation of 2 ARRL committees
(a task force and a working group) to attempt to push technology
issues to the ARRL BOD where it was stated something has
long been missing and/or severely over filtered.
In the MISC category, John Hansen announced at the PIC
seminar on Sunday that he will have a Dec 99 article in QST
detailing a direct frequency entry keypad for the ubiquitous
Icom 706.
It was an enjoyable weekend (for me).

Subject: 56k DSY modem
Greetings, I just stood up a 56k jnos/linux port here and am looking for
others who have "fine tuned" similar systems. In particular I am looking
for mss, mtu and tcp window and other timer settings. I have also done
testing with Jnos/DOS systems as well.
I am also interested if anyone has done testing with the DSY 56k
modem and the Kantronic Data Engine using Johan's jnos40 images.
If you have an old PI2 or PackeTwin card laying around or a Microwave
Modules
MMT 432-28s and even an old style DSY modem I am interested.

Subject: Caldera 2.3 and AX.25 Set-up
I am attempting to setup Caldera Linux 2.3 to support Amateur Radio AX.25
via KISS TNC interface.
The "HOW-TO" document that comes with the Linux software is from 1997 and
does not relate to the 2.2 kernel.
I am able to "load" the "AX.25 Module" via the "kernel modules" application,
but what now? The old documentation refers to a /etc/ax25 directory that
does not exist.
So where is the latest information? Should I switch to Redhat?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Try...
http://radio.linux.org.au
This seems to be the best site for this stuff. I typed in the link
from memory, but I believe it's right.

Indeed a wider waterfall display in PSK31SBW would be useful,
although I find the one provided pretty good. You just have to tune
