that won't happen until I'm a bit richer--either I pay $120~150 for the
TNC (and use freebie software) or pay something similar for software
that will already use my modem. (At least I suspect it would be similar
priced.)

A packet modem is a part (or section) of a TNC. It's the part that takes the
digital signals coming from the TNC's CPU and converts it into a modulation
that a radio can transmit and receive.

Under Radio Shacks websight, you can find some stuff on the 202; one of
the files shows how to connect the 202 to a MFJ tnc. (Look under
service or owners manuals; something like that.)
As for heating, I'm not sure how warm it would get for 10 minutes
continous use, but I've used mine at full power (6W out, cig adapter in
the car) for so rag chew while driving, 30sec-1min tx, about same rx,
and all I noticed was some warming, not alot. Just try it; if it feels
kinda warm, just:
a. use a fan, and blow air over the unit,
b. The metal back plate (that the clip screws into) is the heatsink for
the unit. Somehow screw a finned heatsink to that (hey, it's already
tapped for a heatsink!) and blow air over the unit again.

Wrong newsgroup for this question. "rec.radio.amateur.digital.misc" is really
for data exchange via TNC's, APRS (including GPS and Wx), and similar things
like packet BBS's, etc.
However, as a TWIAR affiliate, here's what's done locally (Los Angeles):
- One system transmits live off the satellite feed. That system's
repeater controller is actually hooked to a dedicated satellite receiver and
also simulcasts it to another repeater on another band (70cm system, with a
remote 23cm system).
- Our other system (2m) uses the real-audio feed for a Sunday
retransmission. That has a soundcard fed radio, but a mobile radio on low
power, not an HT. Most non-repeater radios aren't meant for a 35 minute
transmission, but by using the lowest power setting, the length of the
transmit
duty cycle is extended (over that of the higher settings). Mobiles generally
can take the heat better.
Things to consider:
- Using the MIDI port (there should be both audio and logic controls in
that port) instead of simply connecting the audio directly from "line out" and
PTT via a TNC.
- Give a QUICK CW ID and drop carrier during the ID timing spaces.
Perhaps link this with the "external control board" that the TWIAR guys
designed (see the http://www.qsl.net/twiar shadow for the PDF file). Also,
increase heat dissipation with a fan blowing air on the radio (or if you're
both rich and insane, add liquid nitrogen or helium cooling via pipes running
through the heatsinks; poor and insane - cold water!).
- Ask Steven Anderman, K2SMA, or George Bowen, W2XBS. Mr. Anderman's
local NJ repeater that handled TWIAR recently stopped, so he's pumping it out
onto a 2m simplex frequency (I don't know which one). However, he'll be able
to tell you how he wired it. As for Mr. Bowen's setup, I don't know if the
Albany area is fed via his computer at the same time as the satellite uplink
or
if it takes the downlink, but maybe he can help too.
[To TWIAR staff: Perhaps this is a good topic for one of the special slots.]

A MIDI port is an optically-isolated Async serial port operating at 31250
baud. It has nothing to do with audio.

Special event DX from South Africa, ZS100ZAR and ZS100OVS for centenary
commemorations of Anglo Boer War.
The Boers were the first in history to order two-way radio telegraph
equipment for military purposes. To commemorate the war with the focus
on the roll of communication during the war, special event DX stations
will be active in Bloemfontein and Pretoria, the capitols of the two
Boer Republics.
The special event call signs: ZS100-OVS and ZS100-ZAR will be
used respectively. Initially the stations will be active over the period=
7 to 13 October, including the date of the outbreak of the war 100 years=
ago.
Frequencies to be used are:
80m: 3.640 MHz.
40m: 7.082 MHz.
20m: 14.160 MHz.
QSL cards will be issued. QSLs can be sent to:
