For anyone who is looking for a USB to RS232 serial adaptor that works with
ham radio software and devices then I can recommend the following product:

Sitecom CN-104

This is not the cheapest USB<>RS232 adaptor on the market but this one does
work extremely well.

I've used this with most of the common ham programs such as Ham Radio
Deluxe, Hamscope, FT817 Commander etc. to drive assorted gizmos where it
has always worked with out problem.

This device seems to work perfectly when used as simple RS232 port. It also
works when stressed and abused. The Yaesu FT-817 programming cable I made
is powered from the serial port and again this works perfectly with the
CN-104.

Apart from these devices ability to work when they have to also power
something driven from the RS232 voltages, the quality of the drivers is
often a limiting feature.

My CN-104 was acquired without drivers but I was able to download them for
both Win2k and WinXP from the Sitecom web site. Unlike several other
USB<>RS232 adaptors, the drivers for the CN-104 have never "blue-screened".

Having used many of these adaptors in the past, the CN-104 is by far the
best performing and most stable and reliable.

The lack of serial ports on new computers will become a growing problem for
hams with numerous legacy devices that need serial connectivity. I think it
would be useful for all of us if we had a list of known USB adaptors that
we have used and seen working. If you have such a device, either send the
info in a bull to USB@WW or in an email to me at g7hud@g7hud.com. I'll
collate any replies and put the results up on a webpage for everyone to
use.

p.s. I have no connection with Sitecom other than as a very satisfied
customer.
