Ext. battery pack for Yaesu vx5r

I want to build a battery pack for my vx5r, but need to clarify something
before go ahead.

Q1. will ext battery damage the vx5r if I connect the battery pack for
several hours and with 50% time of signal transmission ?
Q2. what is best voltage supply(e.g. 6/12v from lead-acid type or
7.2/9.6v from series of 1.2v cell) to vx5r ?
Q3. which type is the better, lead-acid or NiCd/NiMh cell ?

Tks
D
