Following the loss of my mobile phone I recently had the need to
unlock my old spare mobile so as to be able to use it on my
chosen network.

My phone is of the Nokia make and as many of you will be aware
can be unlocked by removing the sim card and imputing a code. In
all 5 attempts may be made thereafter I believe the phone no
longer allows the option to unlock via this route.

(I have a radio ham friend contact who unlocks phones by
connecting them via a lead to his pc, usually the task takes a
matter of seconds for which he asks for 7 gbp, even 10 gbp off
the unsuspecting.)

Surfing the internet I easily found many sites offering a service
to unlock your mobile phone with one easy phone call to a premium
telephone line for just a few minutes at various rates. I
decided having read all the bumf from these sites to give it a go
and chose a site stating that calls cost one pound fifty per
minute. In all, unlocking my phone should according the maths
cost 4.50 gbp, (a cheaper option than my ham friend and I dont
need to leave the comfort of my home).

So I gave it a go, call lasted just a few minutes, received my
code, tried it on my phone and guess what, it didn't work!

Now I am not saying by any means that this method of unlocking
doesn't work, all I am saying is that it didn't work for me
despite my following instructions explicitly and entering all
code numbers/letters exactly.

An email to 'who ever' provided me the code using their 'trouble
shooter' email service produced an automated receipt and a
message stating that they hoped to reply within two days. Well
you can guess the rest, no reply, nothing, leaving me to hold my
breath awaiting my phone bill to find out exactly what I have
been charged for those few minutes.

So my advice to anyone considering unlocking their phone via this
manner is DONT!! because if it fails to work and it goes the
shape of the pear your left out on a limb unable to do anything.

My phone is now unlocked, took it to my ham friend who linked it
via wire to his pc and unlocked it in 20 seconds and had the
cover back on...job done ... "ten pounds please"!

Learn from my mistake ... stay clear !
