Hallo Mitteinander.

Win ME - DOS - COM Ports (a fix)

For those of you that have been told by your PC manufacturer that DOS
programs will not work on your PC hardware because the COM ports
will not work then there may be hope - as I have just found on mine -
a year after purchase.

Thanks to G4IJL for the info.

If in Dos you type MODE COM1:19200

If the result is ....
Function not supported on this computter

Mictrosoft web site also confirms this change - site address is as follows:-

http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q252184

Basically the reason is that some PC motherboards have ACPI
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface
This means that when parts of your computer are not required they are turned
off. In my case every time MS-DOS programs were run the COM ports turned off
as DOS does not keep the ports turned on.

The answer is to turn off the power management for the COM ports.

This requires editing the registry and this can mess up your computer if done
incorrectly so be VERY Carefull.

Run "regedit.exe" program from the windows directory

Then select the following:-

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
                   |
                 System
                     |
                  CurrentControlSet
                        |
                      Services
                          |
                          VxD
                            |
                           VCOMM

Then on the edit menu click Modify

Four groups of characters will be seen 01 00 00 00

Change the 01 to 00

to leave the display like this - 00 00 00 00

Then close the registry program (regedit)

Reboot the PC - now the comm ports will come alive

If this is your problem - now your PC will work running DOS
Terminal programs for Packet etc.

Hope this is of some help to you with your PC problems.

Regards Derek (G0RGL@GB7DEO.#32.GBR.EU)
