I think I may have to accept I was mistaken about linear psu's normally
being used in desktop pc's. I must admit I've only taken one apart and
that had a hefty toroidal in it indicative of a linear psu, maybe it was a
one off ? (Long time ago).
Anyway these blasted smpsu's are a menace.
My tv set uses one and so does the vcr. The amount of noise they throw
down the mains supply means I have to disconnect them as well when I want
to use HF :-(
As an aside to this, the power line from the local electricity board
stepdown transformer to my QTH is carrier 100% above ground on poles
instead of being buried in the ground like other areas. I wonder if this
also makes the supply more prone to being "dirty" ? This is a distance of
about a quarter of a mile.
Like Harry M1BYT I was thinking of using a nice clean supply to run both
my laptops. Seing Harry's bull confirms that I'm not alone in thinking
of such measures.
With G3XSE's trick of using a transformer, yep I was thinking of that too,
and if I had'nt come across this old telephone pickup coil I may well have
attempted the same.
It's comforting to know we're all thinking alike :-)
Well so far the pick up seems to have cured the noise enough for me to
carry on enjoying my radio. I assume I may be able to do the same thing
if I take the audio from my soundcard to the tranmitter (via a transformer)
as I'd like to have a go at PSK31. I receive it ok and I'm impressed
with this mode. (Anyone know of a DOS program for PSK31 ?)
