Hi Pete and all,
Good grief, the BBS timed out while I was reading that monster! Anyway,
Toronto is an interesting place or at least it was back in the day, I
just can't imagine a smoke ring around the CN Tower unless one of the
transmitters caught fire. (;->) GO Transit is another thing I watched
evolve, green on white as always but now all new fuel efficient low
emission Diesels and double deck coaches.
Nah, Puffing Billy bears no resemblance to any locomotive or train name
other than those at Beemish and Queensland so unless she somehow heard of
the one that worked the colliery (Beemish) the name was purely her own. A
nick for steamer is "pufferbelly" so that could have been an inspiration
but I'm only guessing.
Eh, that's the Forth Bridge built by EWS Railway over the Firth of Forth,
not the fourth, third or fifth unless you're thinking of a fifth of
Scotch and in that case we can have a wee dram. (;->) Coincidentally I
have several pictures and one night shot with Edinburgh in the background
being so spectacular I printed and framed it. It's over my bed between an
SF cable car in front of the Sir Frances Drake Hotel and a Garratt
chugging along in Zimbabwe being watched by some Zulu women. Anyway, I
have several of the Flying Scotsman too, many were painted green until BR
came along and painted them black but now that's gone so those remaining
have been repainted in original colors. BTW Mallard is just a bit
different being bright blue.
That reminds me, you may want to look up the A1 Locomotive Trust and
their Tornado. Since all the A1 Pacifics were scrapped and they wanted to
complete restoration of the locomotive line they built it from scratch,
all brand new with just a few modern bits making it legal main line steam
that doesn't need a protection Diesel lurking about.
Still no idea where those huge blocks of coal could have come from, all
gone now when they cleaned up those piles of clam shells. The river
channel never was enough for large craft but could accomodate a paddle
wheel steamboat. As a matter of fact the River Queen floating resturant
is a replica stern wheeler with twin screws you can't see below the water
line. Could have been a spill, not likely it came from offshore since
current flows south to north being the Gulf Stream which would have
buried it at Sandy Hook rather than washing it into the river. Here's an
interesting note, there are two steam locomotives of 1800s design sitting
upright in 60' of water offshore from where I'm sitting. I have a picture
but no clues as to who made them or how they got there.
